A life of struggle and resistance, captured in a work of art. On Wednesday, September 4, the Tour Juana Colón presented a mural that encapsulates the life and legacy of Juana Colón. This mural is located in what was once the tobacco production factory known as the Puerto Rico Leaf Company, built in 1905 by the American Tobacco Co. This location adds a special symbolism, since one of Juana's main battles was the defense of the rights of the workers of this same factory, even though she was not part of that group.
The mural, created by Comerío artist Wilfredo López, captures the courage and determination of Juana Colón. Through diverse images, such as the battle for the rights of tobacco workers, the laundresses, the tobacco leaf, the tobacco warehouses, the factory reader and the figure of Juana Colón herself, the mural comes to life and reflects part of the town's history. This work now embellishes the urban center of Comerío, offering a space for reflection and homage.
This mural is part of the third stop of the Tour Juana Colón, a project promoted by the non-profit organization Casa Juana Colón. Through this project, the organization is betting on a self-sustainable future that will allow it to cover its operating expenses without relying exclusively on donations. The success of the Tour is not only crucial for the organization, but also for the community, since Casa Juana Colón provides essential services to women victims of violence, youth, children and the community in general. So we invite you to be part of this cultural tour that invites you to travel back in time to learn about the life and career of Juana Colón and her impact on the history of the town of Comerío.
